Thanksgiving Stuffing

My dad is one of 11 siblings.

He grew up on a dairy farm where my grandma, his mother, was in the kitchen constantly. She was always thinking ahead to the next meal. I can only imagine how chaotic some of those meals were!

Our family has a homemade stuffing recipe that we make every year for Thanksgiving. Many years, our family has 3 or more stuffings on the table…some with raisins, some with apples, and some without.

If you have never had homemade stuffing, I highly encourage you to try it. It’s so much better than the boxed version!

Thanksgiving Stuffing

14 cups dried bread cubes

1 pound pork sausage

1 1/2 cup chicken broth

1/2 cup water

Salt to taste, about 1/2 teaspoon

Ground pepper, to taste

1 teaspoon ground sage

1/4 cup butter

2-3 medium onions

Optional:

3 apples, finely chopped

1/2 cup raisins

Crumble and brown pork sausage in a skillet.  Add to large bowl of bread cubes.  Melt butter in skillet and sauté onion until tender.  Add to bread cube mixture.   If desired, add apple and / or raisins and mix well.  Measure chicken broth and mix in herbs and spices except sage.  Pour over dry ingredients and stir well.  Sprinkle sage on top and stir in.  Dump into a greased 9 x 13 pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 1 - 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
